Building a Collaborative Team
The main idea behind the in-person class is to exercise the foundational knowledge found in the online coursework and to allow students to go back to their hometown with strategies that they can use in their own department. The class features no lecture and no instructor presentations. Its focus is on placing the student in the roles of either a volunteer or career firefighter and, through class discussion, group exercises, and role-playing, understanding the limitations of each group and identifying the strengths each group offers. The BCT’s goal is to help students taking this course learn how volunteer and career firefighters can work together more effectively. If your volunteer department is preparing to add career staff or if your department is already a combination, this course will strengthen the relationships in the fire station and on the fire ground.
